The Downtown Hazleton Farmers’ Market has been cancelled for 2020 due to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The farmers market which has occurred for last 9 years will return in July 2021

Mary Malone, President and of the Chamber and Krista Schneider of DHAP (Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress) noted, “We initially postponed the start in July, hoping we could figure a safe way for both the farmers, vendors and participants to proceed, but as summer has progressed and rules for farm stands and vendors present challenges we decided to cancel.” We appreciate the support of the vendors and especially Burger’ s Farm. We would also like to recognize the partnership and support of the City of Hazleton and at the Parking Authority over the years. Funfest Hometown Heroes webCommunity has always been at the heart of Funfest and now the Funfest Committee is asking the community to help select the inaugural Funfest Hometown Hero.

The Hometown Heroes initiative was started this year as a way to honor local military service members, emergency first responders and medical professionals for their service to Greater Hazleton.

Every month since January, community members have been submitting their nominees for the contest and the Funfest Committee members have been voting to select that month's winner. All seven monthly winners are now in the running to be selected as the Funfest 2020 Hometown Hero.

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has announced plans are well underway for their 128th Anniversary and Executive Business Exposition, which is taking place on Thursday, September 10th. This event is typically held annually in May, however due to COVID-19, the event has been rescheduled to September. In addition, the location has been changed from an indoor event to an outdoor event, in order to allow for proper social distancing guidelines. It will take place at Pasco Schiavo City Park on Poplar Street in Hazleton.

Toohil2015resizedThe Greater Hazleton Chamber is proud to announce the 34th winner of the Athena Business Woman of the Year Award is State Representative Tarah Toohil.

The committee of judges reviewed the applications submitted on the basis of the three critical elements: excelling in professional endeavors, community service, and supporting and mentoring women.

Mary Malone, Chamber President noted “ The Chamber membership has many talented women business leaders who excel in their designated field of expertise. This year’s applications highlighted that talent pool.” The beautiful Athena Award, which is from the International Athena Association, is being sponsored for the first time this year by, Community Bank, N.A. Community Bank Pennsylvania President Barbara Maculloch, a past recipient of Athena award from the Wilkes Barre Chamber noted, “Tarah’s dedication to the youth of the community, and mentoring young girls to strive for their goals, was a key aspect of her application."

The award will be presented on Thursday, September 10, 2020 as part of the Chamber’s 128th annual meeting and business expo. Representative Toohil noted how proud she was to join a long line of strong women who have received the award in the past.
