Downtown Hazleton FarmersÂ’ Market to Open for Second Year PDF Print E-mail
The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with The Center for Landscape Design &farmers_mkt.jpg Stewardship, is gearing up for the second season for the Downtown Hazleton Farmers’ Market.  According to Bill Spear, chairman of the Chamber’s Downtown committee, “It is because of the success of our inaugural event last year that we are moving forward to expand on the event for this year.”  Chamber President Donna Palermo added, “We had a tremendous response from area farmers for our initial year, and at our recent committee meeting we received commitments from them to come back again this year.  We are truly excited to be able to not only bring back the Market for a second year, but we are actually going to expand with additional activities during each week.”  Palermo continues, “To date, we have commitments from Mea’s Restaurant, Frankie’s Restaurant and Carmen’s Bakery & Deli to provide cooking demonstrations or to provide additional food products.  The Penn State Cooperative Master Gardeners have once again committed to provide three workshops in addition to setting up at the actual Market itself.  Thanks to a grant from the Luzerne Foundations, the Center for Landscape Design & Stewardship will also be offering high school students the opportunity to participate in a new “Growing Markets” internship, which will provide local youth with hands-on education in small-scale organic agriculture and the opportunity to sell their products directly at the farmers market. The Hazleton YM/YWCA will once again provide activities for the youth.  Also, the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance will partner once again with activities.  We are in the process of also looking for musicians and artists who might want to take part.  Anyone who feels that they might provide a benefit to the Market, can call the Chamber office and we’ll decide if it is something that we feel would be a good fit.”

The Downtown Hazleton Farmers’ Market is set to take place from July 15th to October 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Downtown Hazleton.   The event will take place in the Citiscape upper parking lot located behind the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce building at 20 W. Broad Street, courtesy of the Hayden Family.

To date, vendors who have committed to participate in this year’s Farmer’s Market include:  Burger’s Farm, Carmen’s Bakery & Deli, Center for Landscape Design & Stewardship, Drum’s Produce, Hair of the Dog/Jagger’s Doggie Deli, Hungarian Pastries & More, O’Hara Orchards, Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Luzerne County, Razz’s Hickory Syrup, and Rohrbach Farms.  Anyone who might be interested in becoming a new vendor should contact the Chamber as there is the opportunity to expand the diversity of locally produced food and garden-related products (such as artisan cheeses, meats or poultry, honey, jams and jellies, bedding plants, etc.).

The Chamber has been granted a permit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food and Nutrition Service which gives the Chamber the ability to accept and redeem Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Permit (SNAP) benefits.  The Commission on Economic Opportunity will be on hand to accept vouchers/SNAP purchases for items purchased at the Market by senior citizens and others.

According to Bill Spear, “We are excited that we have received such great support from our area farmers and we look forward to the Downtown Hazleton Farmers’ Market becoming a destination for people to buy their locally grown items in a very convenient and safe location in Downtown Hazleton.”
