The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, through their partnership with Penn State Hazleton, held a day_of_cultural_sharing_training.jpgtraining session on Wednesday, January 14th for the Chamber’s upcoming Day of Cultural Sharing program scheduled for Wednesday, January 21st.   The program joins business volunteers with fifth grade classrooms for an hour of diversity activities and conversation in an effort to raise diversity awareness. The Annual Day of Cultural Sharing program is designed to engage the business community with the education community to make diversity a priority. This program sends a clear message that we, as a community, value and celebrate diversity.

“Making people feel welcome in our community and understanding our differences is what the program is all about,” stated Chamber president, Donna Palermo.  There is a need to communicate to all residents of our community the differences and similarities among people of all races, religions, and backgrounds. As our community continues to grow in diversity, we must all work together to create a more understanding and cooperative environment. Although there are many people of different backgrounds, in many ways they are the same. The goal is to work together for the betterment of our community and what better place to begin than in our schools with our young people”.

The training session was held at Penn State Hazleton in the Special Events Room at the Highacres Café. Dwayne Hilton, Director of Student Enrollment Services at Penn State Hazleton conducted the training while Linda Mantush, Marketing Assistant for the Chamber, coordinated the business volunteers and worked extensively with the Hazleton Area School District and their teachers.  The volunteers who will be participating include: Lisa Leaman, Spring Pond Homes, Cathy Kurtz, Providence Place, Bill Gerguson, Heidi Roccograndi, Matt Metrick, Janene Shank, Ann Marie Paulshock, Laura Dobreniecki, Ryan Gilson, and Scott Lewis, Network Solutions, Laura Jones, Megan Scherer and Mary Alimecco, Greater Hazleton Health & Wellness Center, John Madden, Chancellor Emeritus, Penn State Hazleton, Monte Lewis and Patty Ferreri, Hilton Reservations & Customer Care, Gina Gasper, WYLN, Sally McGuire, Penn State Hazleton, Scott Koch, UGI Utilities, Inc., Joanne Zahran and Jennifer Shoemaker, OfficeMax, Kim Mucci, Kelly Services, Martie Telepo, Manpower, Juan Mendez, PA CareerLink, Tess Verheyen, McCann School of Business & Technology, Beth Ann Wenner, Volunteer Center of Greater Hazleton, Deb Dodson, Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, Terry Hartlage, Janine Surmick, and Maria Gutron, Dial Corporation, and Brad Hestor and Susan Sauers, General Mills.
