Drugs was the topic of concern this morning at the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Red Carpet Breakfast program held at Mea’s Restaurant in Downtown Hazleton. Hope Within Massage Center in Hazleton sponsored the event. Hazleton Police Chief, Robert Ferdinand, spoke to Chamber members about the severity of drugs in the Greater Hazleton area, noting that this is just not a Hazleton problem, but a community problem. Chief Ferdinand spoke about the “outside” influence of dealers from the New Jersey and New York areas stating that, even though the department has made many arrests and dealers are serving federal prison terms, there is always someone else ready to step in and provide drugs. The reason given is that there are great financial advantages, some dealers making hundreds of thousands of dollars each week. Unfortunately, there is a market for large quantity of drugs in Northeastern PA. Ed Pane, President and CEO of Serento Gardens Alcoholism and Drug Service complemented Chief Ferdinand’s comments and presentation by showing a very disturbing vide on the effects of someone who is addicted to methadone.

The team comprised of players from Mountain Valley Golf Course with team members Ken Huebner, John Rizzo, Peter Mikulka and John Powis took the Chamber’s Championship flight award during the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce 43rd Annual Golf Tournament held Thursday, August 19th at the Valley Country Club.
In addition, great excitement occurred after the tournament play when a putt-off contest was held with John Bodine of OnDemand Energy, sinking a 50’ putt to win the grand prize of $5,000. The excitement built during a putt-off with Bodine and Wister Yuhas. Bodine came closest to the pin and was then the only person eligible to attempt the 50’ putt. Bodine took his time preparing for the putt, and to the delight of the crowd of tournament players and members of the Valley Country Club, sank the putt. Dominic Yannuzzi, Chamber tournament chairperson, video taped the event as Chamber president Donna Palermo and Vice President of Marketing, Leann Fallabel, ran to Bodine to congratulate him on his successful putt.

The Funfest Committee and the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce announced today that the Quantico Marine Corps Band will be at Funfest Weekend September 11 and 12. The Band will present two free admission concerts at the J.J. Ferrara Performing Arts Center on Funfest Saturday, and will lead the Funfest Parade on Sunday.
“We are honored to have been selected by this distinguished group as a venue for their program,” said Chamber President and Funfest Committee member Donna Palermo. “With an authorized strength of one officer and 51 enlisted Marines, the band has travelled all over the country, performing for thousands, and we are sure that they will be warmly welcomed by the people of the Hazleton Area.”
Funfest is a committee of the Chamber, and both groups have been planning the Marines’ appearance since May. Palermo said it has taken a great deal of coordination. “We have formed a special combined committee of Funfest and Chamber volunteers to work out the details of the Marines’ visit to Hazleton, and are now trying to coordinate an itinerary for them.”
