The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce held their 118th Annual Dinner on May 20th. The event began with the very successful Executive Business Exposition and continued with an overview of the Chamber's accomplishments throughout the 2009/2010 fiscal year. The Chamber, through the Sister Cities Association of Hazleton, hosted Italian visitors from the San Serverino Restoration Project in Italy at the Chamber offices last month. The group had undertaken a project of restoration of an abandoned village of San Serverino, situated atop a mountain in the area. The area would, in part, be fashioned as the homes of Eckley Miners’ Village of which they visited during their visit. The Chamber visited this historic region during their visit to Italy in 2006 through the Sister Cities Association.

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Human Resource Committee has announced their Fifth Annual Human Resource Seminar. The half day seminar is being held in on Thursday June 3rd on the 4th Floor of the Hazleton Campus of Luzerne County Community College located at 100 W. Broad Street in Downtown Hazleton. The seminar will run from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm and will be $50.00 for Chamber members and $75.00 for Non-Chamber members. The registration fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch and materials.
This seminar is excellent for any small business owner, human resource manager or assistant, general manager, middle manager or supervisor. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from two topics for each of the three one-hour breakout sessions. Session one topics include an Update on Legal Issues presented by Elizabeth Maguschak, Esquire of McNees Wallace & Nurick, LLC OR Workplace Certifications-Workplace readiness, Work Keys and Assessments presented by the PA Careerlink, Luzerne County Hazleton; Session two topics include Background Checks-E-Verify, I-9 Taxes, presented byWorkforce Resources OR How to Develop a Workplace Wellness Program presented by ChamberChoice and Blue Cross of NEPA; and session three topics include Developing and Implementing a Workplace Violence Policy presented by David Martin, OSHA Compliance Assistant Specialist, or How to Prepare for an Unemployment Compensation Hearing presented by the PA Unemployment Compensation Board of Reivew.

Luzerne County Commissioners Maryanne Petrilla, Thomas G. Cooney, and Stephen Urban will address the Hazleton Area business community later this month during the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Legislative Update series of Red Carpet Breakfasts. The program is sponsored by KNBT, a division of North Penn Bank.
The program will take place from 7:45 AM to 9:00 AM on Wednesday, May 26th at Sand Springs Country Club in Drums.

Dr. Deb Carr, Director of Curriculum & Instruction for the Hazleton Area School District, has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Athena Award, sponsored by Berger Family Dealerships.
The Award, presented each year to a Hazleton Area businesswoman "for outstanding professional achievement," will be presented at the 118th Annual Meeting of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce. The dinner meeting will take place on Thursday, May 20th at the Genetti Best Western Inn & Suite Hall of Presidents.
