The committee, chaired by William Spear Jr. of Hazle Drug, is
comprised of volunteer representatives from a variety of business
concerns located in the Center City Area. They have been meeting
on a regular basis for several months to plan programs to attract
positive attention, and shoppers, to downtown.
According to Spear, “Downtown Hazleton is one of the largest
business centers in the area with over 400 firms. Area residents
who may not have visited downtown in some time will be surprised
to know the variety of goods and services available in a very small
geographic area.” According to Spear, “The Chamber Downtown
Committee is attempting to draw together various business persons
to coordinate promotions and perhaps other activities which may
help to attract new faces to downtown and help to revitalize the
business climate here.”
Spear said that in addition to the Easter promotion, the committee
is attempting to sign up volunteers from the downtown business community
to participate in the Great PA Cleanup campaign on Saturday,
April 21st. Business and property owners are being asked to commit
to clean up the front and rear of their properties that morning to
demonstrate their involvement and commitment. Downtown business and
property owners, and anyone in the general public who would like
to participate in the clean-up can contact Leann Scatton at the Chamber
office at 455-1509 or via email lscatton@hazletonchamber.org.
